Reki, Video and Code Development Workstation

I recently overhauled one of my computers. Until recently it was my primary machine used for video and image work, and code development. Unfortunatly, I also used it for email, web browsing, im chatting, and video/music playback, which lead to a serious problem. Mixing development and consumer environments led to reduced efficiency of workflow, and a slow computer. So I erased Reki’s system drive, and split the system responsibilities:

  • Moved all media playback onto networked XBox
  • Moved shared media archive (samba) onto Hikari (Gentoo)
  • Moved long term downloads (torrent) onto Hikari
  • Moved IM, browsing, email, ssh, and other internet clients onto Nemu (iBook)

So now I have 2 seperate development environments, both of which are unpoluted with unnessessary pleasentries.

  • Video: 5gig root partition, 160gig scratch, Vegas, Photoshop, Wacom tablet drivers, compression codecs
  • Code: 5gig root partition, 160gig scratch, Visual C++ 2003, code libraries, Acrobat reader, Filezilla

Now, Reki doesn’t need a keyboard or mouse, as I’ll be able to control her from Nemu using Synergy. This will lead to a new era of free desk space and productivity.
