Well, Uncle Fester was already doing it in the 60s, and even as far back as the 30s... Though I'm not sure he worked his way much past a one-bit (once-bit? One-bite?) adder.

I also think that I linked an article, a while ago, about scientists hooking a monkey to a robot arm, and the monkey then using it to feed itself a banana. Other experiments I've heard of include moving a mouse cursor with your mind and/or... a rat brain flying an airplane? I think?

...I used to dream about being augmented, digitally, in Middle School. Oh the bliss of having a 486 in my head and being able to dial BBSes with my mind, play Duke Nukem while in school, and have full-duplex chat with friends across the room! (Though I've thought about it more since then, and I would not want to be augmented in any way to where it was not safe to perform a full, immediate shutdown on any wired-in hardware. I mean, the thought of someone hacking your brain is just uberfreaky. Stay the hell out of my wetware. Eew.)

Oh, to be an Echo! Because everyone wants to be a cute computer! *dramatic, bishie hair-toss! Cue the sakura!*

As I recall, in the nineties there were some surgeons who experimented with electronic sight. They managed to plug a camera directly into a blind man's brain, which let him have limited if low-quality sight.
