Wireless Uplink
bmd has recently moved into the city of Windsor, down near the university. With this transition comes all sorts of other changes, like moving your adsl service between lines. As Jet2.Net does not currently provide dry-loop dsl service, he has gone with Sympatico, our local craptastic incumbent provider. Still, the order is not due to be active until next Wednesday.
His neighbours have unsecured access points, but he does not have a wireless nic for his laptop (which, running win98, couldn’t do much with it anyway). I brought over Kanna, my trusty notebook, and got to work. Configured the wireless interface to connect to the unsecured AP generously provided by his neighbour, configured the ethernet interface for his lan, and setup masquerading across the two.
With a quick switch of the default gateway, we’ve got a set of workstations back in the wired. It feels good.
It turns out that we’re currently using Cogeco cable, and indicates that we’re capable of 778/580 kbps, which isn’t terrible at all. Network responce is very snappy, regularly under 50ms to google.
This unexpected kindness of a person I’ve never met gives me hope for the world.
